Ancient Turkey, Persia and India all have aromatic oils in their practices. In India, aromatic atmospheres were maintained in temples by building them out of sandalwood.(6) In China, as far back as 2000 B.C., the use of aromatics were recorded on ancient scrolls. The Bible has numerous mention of oils, and the Christ child was gifted with frankincense and myrrh. It is apparent from history that there is a long tradition of influencing our bodies by using various essential oils. Using scents in our immediate environment as well as applying oils directly to our bodies affects us on many levels and can improve our mental, emotional and physical health. Our sense of smell is an integral part of our digestion. Even before we see our food, our digestive juices are stimulated to flow by the aroma of our food. Aroma is linked to taste; a lack of aroma and/or sufficient taste in our food is a good indication that the value of light energy or chi is severely diminished. This is because chi is about frequency, and our sense of smell is determined by the various electromagnetic frequencies carried by scents. Research has shown that we begin to respond to aroma within one to three seconds. Each different odor molecule fits into different depressions or receptors on the cilia. Once activated, the nerve cell sends an electrical signal to the limbic system of the brain, the home of our emotions, sexual feelings, memory and learning. It provides a link between the voluntary and involuntary nervous systems, and the right and left brain hemispheres. The deep limbic system lies near the center of the brain. From an evolutionary standpoint, it is the older, more primitive part of our brain that first enables us to experience and express emotions, especially the fight or flight syndrome when we smell danger in the air.(9) The limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. Since these functions are so integral to our being, using aromatherapy as a feng shui cure has a very powerful impact upon us. We are most powerfully influenced aromatically by high-grade essential oils made from various parts of plants: this is another gift from the plant kingdom. The explanation for the impact of aromatics from plants oils may lie in the fact that humans and plants are so similar chemically (the only difference is that the magnesium atom replaces the iron atom in plants).(10) The other part of the explanation lies in the energetic influence plant oils have on the human body.
